The 6 Layers of Loneliness for Entrepreneurs

The dirtiest secret in entrepreneurship isn’t about money, strategy, or competition. It’s that the more successful you become, the lonelier you get. In masterminds, you perform. With family, you protect them from the reality. With friends, you edit yourself. And with your team, you can’t be fully open.

I’ve spent more than two decades as a founder and coaching female founders, and in all that time, the one experience that comes up again and again – regardless of revenue, industry, or stage – is loneliness. Not the kind that comes from being alone. The kind that comes from being surrounded by people who can’t quite hold the full weight of what you’re carrying.

It makes sense. When your worst month still generates more revenue than most people’s annual salary, who do you call? When your coaching business teaches women to overcome burnout and you’re running on fumes yourself, who do you tell? The higher you climb, the smaller that circle gets.

I’ve come to call this The 6 Layers of Loneliness – six distinct relationships where founders quietly disconnect as they grow.

Layer 1: Love. Success can change the dynamic in romantic partnerships. Some founders worry unconsciously that they only get to have one – success or love – and so they hold their partner at arm’s length, or subconsciously sabotage their revenue growth. Others use financial independence as armor against vulnerability. The result is feeling alone instead of partnered.

Layer 2: Family. Maybe your family is wonderful. And maybe that’s exactly why you protect them from the truth of what you’re navigating. Or perhaps your success has quietly shifted the power dynamics in ways nobody acknowledges out loud, and you’re not sure if they see you, or the money you make.

Layer 3: Friendships. When life is objectively good, there’s a particular kind of loneliness that comes from not knowing how to connect anymore. “If everything is going so well, what do I even talk about?” So you keep it surface-level. You edit. You show up for everyone else and quietly wonder if you’re allowed to share how you really feel.

Layer 4: Colleagues. The peers you came up with don’t quite have the same problems you do anymore. And the founders at your level are half competitors, half colleagues, which means the candor you crave is always slightly out of reach. There’s a new hierarchy, and everyone feels it, even if no one names it.

Layer 5: Masterminds and Mentoring Communities. You joined to feel less alone, and instead you feel the pressure to look like everything is working. Missed a revenue goal? You’re not saying that out loud. There’s an unspoken code in high-level rooms: project strength, project abundance. So you do. And leave feeling just as alone as when you arrived.

Layer 6: Clients and Followers. You love your clients, genuinely, fiercely. And yet there’s an exhaustion that comes from always being the one with the answers, always holding space, always being adored but not met as an equal. The adoration can feel as isolating as indifference.

Here’s what I know after 20+ years as an entrepreneur: isolation isn’t a season you’ll grow out of. At the $1M+ level, it’s practically a structural inevitability, built into the very nature of leading something bigger than yourself.

What changes everything is having one person in your corner who you can be totally honest with, who has been where you are, who holds no judgment, who believes in your success (even when you’ve temporarily stopped believing in it yourself), and who can help you navigate the next chapter with clarity instead of (secret) panic.

That’s the work I do. Because isolation doesn’t just feel bad, it limits your vision for what’s possible.
