Is It Time To Turn Your Expertise Into A Certification?

I’ve co-created and scaled certification trainings for 15 years, resulting in $220M in revenue and 40,000+ students trained across 100+ countries.

Given my experience, founders come to me to ask two questions: should I create a certification, and if so, how do I scale it?

First – what is a certification?

A certification is a structured training program that teaches other people your proprietary methodology, and awards them a credential when they complete it.

It takes your unique process, your framework, your way of getting results, and turns it into something teachable.

Graduates of your certification become trained practitioners of your method. They carry your approach into the world, with your credential behind their name.

Why is a certification one of the most valuable things you can build?

There are 5 ways certification can be transformative for you and for the value of your business.

  1. It exponentially increases the impact of your mission. Instead of you personally serving every client, you’re training others to do what you do, expanding your reach far beyond what’s possible with just you delivering your methodology.
  2. It can add a 6, 7, or 8 figure revenue stream to your business practically overnight. Certification can be one of the fastest paths to a meaningful new revenue stream.
  3. It raises you to a new level of visibility and authority in your industry. When you certify practitioners in your method, you’re not just an expert, you’re the originator of a recognized approach in your field. That’s a different level of positioning.
  4. It enhances your company’s value for a future sale. Certifications add what buyers look for: proprietary IP, a high ticket revenue engine, a strong community of raving fans, and revenue that doesn’t depend entirely on you showing up.
  5. It leaves a powerful legacy. Your method lives on through everyone you train, long past your direct involvement in the business.

Is a certification the right next step for you?

Here’s the diagnostic I use:

Do you have a proven methodology with a clear result? Not a collection of ideas, a repeatable process with a track record. The thing you’ve done for clients, again and again, that works.

Are people already asking to learn your method? Not just “can you coach me?”, but “can you teach me how you do this?” If you’re hearing that question, the market is already telling you there’s a certification in your work.

Do you have an audience who trusts you? You can enroll certifications from cold traffic, however that may require high ad spend. If you have a warm audience, people who already believe in your work and your method, it’s far easier to get started.

If the answer to all three questions is yes, the question isn’t whether to create a certification, it’s how to do it without overbuilding, underpricing, or launching without a clear path to your revenue goal.

Founders I’ve worked with to create or scale certifications have generated million and multi-million dollar revenues and exits.
