Could You Sell Your Business Tomorrow? Here’s How To Know.

A founder came to me recently to see if I thought she could sell her coaching school. My honest answer was: not yet.

The hard truth was that she was missing the #1 thing buyers want.

Technically, there are multiple factors that determine whether or not your business can sell right now.

But in reality, there’s only one thing that matters most to a buyer.

I call it “The Revenue Machine”.

What Is The Revenue Machine?

Most buyers don’t pay for potential. They don’t pay for your vision, your reputation, or how hard you’ve worked. They pay for one thing: predictability.

Specifically, they want to know that your business is a Revenue Machine, i.e. they put $1 in and get $X out, reliably, month after month, without you in the room.

The founder I mentioned? She had recently changed her ad strategy, and her ads had stopped converting. Revenue was down significantly. There was no predictable lead flow and no consistent conversion, and no clear path to revenue growth.

There was nothing that shows the buyer how they will recover their investment, and make money, consistently, from her business.

No predictability, no sale.

The 3 Questions Every Buyer Is Really Asking

When a buyer looks at your business, they’re asking three questions about your Revenue Machine:

  1. Where does your revenue come from? A business that depends on one channel, one client, or one founder-driven relationship is a risk. Buyers ideally want diversified, stable revenue streams that don’t evaporate when you leave.
  2. How predictable is it? An income machine that has consistent, recurring (and ideally contracted) revenue commands the highest multiples. Volatility triggers haircuts in valuation.
  3. Will it continue without you? If your revenue is built on you – your personal relationships, your face, or your direct involvement in sales and delivery – you can and must build a structure that allows the business to run – and grow – whether you’re there or not. (No matter how personal your brand is, I promise you that this can be done.)

How To Know If You Have A Revenue Machine

Here’s a simple diagnostic. Ask yourself: if I stepped away from my business for 30-60 days tomorrow, what would happen to revenue?

If the honest answer is “it would drop significantly,” you don’t yet have a fully functioning income machine.

The good news is that businesses between $1M and $10M might be closer to having a solid Revenue Machine than their founders think.

The Revenue Machine often just needs to be strategized, systematized, and de-risked. That work typically takes 12 to 36 months, which is exactly why the best time to start preparing for an exit is 1-3 years before you’re ready to sell.
